Grade Calculation
EduGrade automatically calculates the overall average. Here's how the calculation works step by step.
Calculation Steps
Step 1: Category Averages
For each category, the average of all grades is calculated:
- Numeric grades: Sum ÷ count
- Plus/minus grades: Symbols are converted to percentage values, then averaged
Step 2: Weighted Overall Average
Category averages are combined using their weights:
Weighted Avg = Σ (Category Avg × Category Weight)
Step 3: Final Grade
The weighted average is converted to a final grade using the grade ranges.
Full Example
Categories:
- Exam: Weight 50%
- Participation (Plus/Minus): Weight 25%
- Homework: Weight 25%
Student's grades:
| Category | Grades | Average |
|---|---|---|
| Exam | 2, 3, 2 | 2.33 → 66.8% |
| Participation | +, +, ~ | (80+80+50)/3 = 70% |
| Homework | 1, 2, 2 | 1.67 → 83.3% |
Weighted Average:
= (66.8% × 0.50) + (70% × 0.25) + (83.3% × 0.25)
= 33.4% + 17.5% + 20.8%
= 71.7%
→ 71.7% corresponds to Grade 2 (Good) based on default ranges
What Affects the Calculation?
- Excluded grades — Grades with "Include in Average" disabled are ignored
- Pending grades — Not included in the calculation
- Attendance auto-grading — With auto-grading enabled, a grade 5 (fail) can be automatically assigned
Class Statistics
EduGrade also shows class-wide statistics:
- Class average — Weighted average of all students
- Grade distribution — How many students have which grade
